Gemini Web Hosting offers two main types of hosting, Linux and Windows.
Unless you specifically need the features of Windows Hosting we recommend you go for a Linux Package, as there are more applications and flexibility available.
The advantage of Linux web hosting / servers is the software that it can run compared to Windows web hosting / servers.
For example, a Linux package will support and run PHP, Perl, CGI, and MySQL services. PHP and Perl are the scripting languages used in most of the popular web applications available today. For example Wordpress, Joomla, PHPBB, vbulletin, etc. If you are unsure as to which web hosting package to purchase check with the developer system requirements. It will tell you whether you need Perl, PHP, ASP, Coldfusion, etc.
If that is not applicable, ie you have no specific requirements at this time go for Linux. Don’t worry if you choose the wrong package we can always swap you over later on.
The most common Linux operating systems used for web hosting today are: Red Hat Enterprise 3.0 to 5.0
Generally any application written in ASP or Coldfusion is best used on a Windows hosting package. Typically, ASP and Coldfusion applications tend be custom written code. A big company would hire an ASP programmer to code them their web interface. For some reason, companies prefer the ASP and Coldfusion applications over PHP and Perl applications even though they are capable of doing most of the same things.
Windows also has its own database server. Its called MsSQL. This will only run on Windows but it can’t do anything differently that MySQL can(Linux’ database software).
